Fitch Laboratory Fellowships in Ceramic Petrology
Full-time, fixed-term positions
The Fitch Laboratory of the British School at Athens (BSA), a centre for advanced research in science-based archaeology, internationally renowned in the field of archaeological ceramic analysis, invites applications for two research positions in ceramic petrology:
1. Williams Fellow in Ceramic Petrology (full-time, fixed-term post for 3 years)
The Fellow will undertake research on archaeological ceramics as member of a research team, involving work in the field, the laboratory and the library, in order to produce publications of international excellence. In addition to Laboratory projects, the Fellow will be encouraged to pursue his/her own research initiatives. His/her research programme will be agreed with the Laboratory Director and approved by the Fitch Laboratory Committee, and his/her performance will be subject to periodic evaluation. The Fellow is expected to contribute to the BSA’s teaching programme, including the postgraduate training course on ceramic petrology organised annually by the Fitch Laboratory, and to coordinate the use and maintenance of the laboratory facilities for ceramic petrology (e.g. microscopes, reference collections).
Candidates must hold a PhD (or be close to acquiring one) in Archaeology or Archaeological Science combined with proven training/experience in using petrographic analysis with thin sections (optical microscopy). Importance is attached to familiarity with Aegean or east Mediterranean archaeology, and knowledge of Modern Greek is desirable (but not essential). Evidence of the ability to produce research publications to an international standard will be an advantage. Applicants should be able to engage in and contribute to a research group and develop research agendas.
The fellowship is for three years. The post is based in Athens, Greece, and the gross salary will be in the range of 25,000-27,500€ per annum, with health insurance and additional funding for research/conference travel (up to 1,500€ p.a.).
2. Ceramic Petrology Fellow for the ‘Corinth Punic Amphora Building Project’ (full-time, fixed-term post for 18 months)
The Fellow will undertake research, with emphasis on the application of ceramic petrology, in the context of an interdisciplinary project on the so-called Punic Amphora Building at Corinth. S/he will collaborate with other laboratory staff and an international team of collaborators on the petrographic and elemental analysis of ceramic and geological samples from Corinth and sites in the western Mediterranean, and the final synthesis of the scientific and archaeological results. S/he will work in the field, the laboratory and the library, aiming to produce publications of international excellence.
Candidates must hold a PhD (or be close to acquiring one) in Archaeology or Archaeological Science combined with proven training/experience in using petrographic analysis with thin sections (optical microscopy), while any experience in combining ceramic petrology with elemental analysis will be considered as an asset. Familiarity with Mediterranean archaeology and the study of transport amphoras will be considered favourably. Evidence of the ability to produce research publications to an international standard will be an advantage. Applicants should be able to engage in and contribute to a research group and develop research agendas.
The fellowship is for eighteen months. The post is based in Athens, Greece, and the gross salary will be in the range of 25,000-27,500€ per annum, with health insurance and additional funding for research/conference travel (up to 1,500€).
