Two positions relevant to members of The Society for Archaeological Sciences are currently open at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Department of Human Evolution in Leipzig, Germany
The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology unites scientists with various backgrounds (natural sciences and humanities) whose aim is to investigate the history of humankind from an interdisciplinary perspective with the help of comparative analyses of genes, cultures, cognitive abilities, languages and social systems of past and present human populations as well as those of primates closely related to human beings.

We are seeking a researcher to conduct isotopic studies in the broader context of Pleistocene human evolution. This includes sample collection, analysis, methodological development and publication. We are particularly interested in candidates able to address environmental issues such as climate or seasonality and who can interact with geochronologists, palaeoanthropologists and archaeologists within the Department. Sample material (predominantly vertebrate remains and molluscs) will derive from several archaeological sites excavated by members of the Department. The selected applicant will have to take advantage of a recently installed Kiel IV carbonate device coupled to a Thermo Scientific 253 plus IRMS. We expect the ideal candidate to be able to operate an IRMS and the connected devices such as a TCEA and a Kiel device.
This research position may begin immediately. The selected candidate will have a significant track record of research. Conditions will depend on seniority and the appointment is extendable up to six years. Joint or partial appointments will be considered if the appointment is mainly based in Leipzig. We seek a researcher that uses the archaeological sedimentary record to reconstruct past human behavior, addressing issues of site formation and the context of archaeological remains. We are particularly interest in researchers that apply soil micromorphology and FTIR (IR and microFTIR) techniques to questions of interest to our department. The ideal candidate should be able to integrate and cooperate with a multidisciplinary environment and work directly with Paleolithic archaeologists, archaeological scientists, and geochronologists.
